I thought it was funny to note that whenever I have an issue with the Sport Trac, doing figure 8s in a big parking lot is the fix. Chunky Power Steering At idle, working in new limited slip gear oil and eliminating chatter in the rear end , calibrating the Compass, and most recently settling down a bizarre wheel knocking, steering wheel rocking, pull to the left at speed that I honestly thought was a wheel falling off - but appears to be power steering fluid / pump related —- all “fixed” by figure 8s! Is there anything they can’t do??

Another common issue. Power steering fluid (Mercon V) aeration usually happens when the wheels are turned with the engine NOT running. Usually when working on the front of the vehicle with the tires off the ground.

Swshawaii, Thanks for the info! - That is exactly what I had done recently regarding that last Power Steering oddity. BTW, I do have an inner tie rod end on the passenger side with about 1/1000" slop, but everything else is tight - but the air in the power steering must accentuate any slop and set up a knocking shimmy that I last felt in an '86 Ford Escort Station wagon with a tie rod end that was insanely wasted.
