It's almost like Tom Hanks in "Castaway" did with a volleyball--except that in that film, he was able to keep his wits about where fantasy ended and reality ended.

I have Wilson.

Usually, when someone turns an argument around by trying to compare your logic to the human species (in an attempt to out words in your mouth or totally sidestep the real debate), that's when I know they have nothing more constructive to add about the real discussion (which is about dogs vs other animals).

I don't think any animal should be tortured.

But killing a worm, spider, roach, rat, or squirrel is different [in a social sense as well].

People just hate dogs because Hitler loved his more than his people. :p

It is only different in a social sense. It has nothing to do with the value of life. All living creatures care about their life. If they didn't, they would not protect themselves when facing death.

Putting the life of a dog over that of a rat is only what society says we should do.

There are people in other countries that view dogs as a food source. Do we see that as a wrong thing?

I don't.

All living creatures care about their life.

Not true.

I wouldn't consider instinct as another form of caring. I don't think animals care at all; they just survive because it's instinct.

Caring is more of an ethical or moral attribute, perhaps? Something only most humans posses?

Do you know that as a fact?

How can you than think a dog deserves special treatment compared to other animals.

Sorry, I think it is BS! Dog fighting, cat fighting, cock fighting, fish fighting, etc. that does not fall under natural circumstances is wrong. Mistreating a dog is no different than mistreating a fish. Nor is it any different than mistreating a pig or a horse.

Tom

I'm with Tom on this one. He nailed it.

The only difference between killing a dog and killing a spider is that it is socially more acceptable to kill a spider than it is to kill a dog. Ripping the leg off a granddaddy long-legs spider and watching it suffer is no different than ripping the leg of a dog and watching it suffer. The dog is just more cuddly, so people get bent out of shape about ripping dog's legs off.

Killing is killing.

Torture is torture.

It is much easier for me to take a spider's life than it is to take a dog's life. However, it is really the same thing if you get right down to it. However, if I kill the spider, my wife gives me a hug. If I kill a dog, my wife makes me sleep on the couch for a week or two. If the neighbors find out I killed a dog, they call the cops.

How does this make any sense?

Oh, yeah?

Oh, well. I'm done with this debate. Honostly, after watching the news today, I now believe America is full of crap when it comes to real issues. Here, we dedicate 15 minutes of headline news to Vick killing some dogs... meanwhile, people are being killing in Darfur, blown up in Iraq, dying in Alfganistan.. not to mention the flooring in Amerca.

Boy, do we make a mockery out of real news.

Gavin, that's no big deal. If he gets sent to a federal prison in the South, every other guy in the place will be named "Jesus".

(Punchline stolen from Dennis Miller, who said it about Noriega when he supposedly found Jesus in a Florida prison.)
