Is my alternator charging enough, or do I need a new battery.

2004 Sport Trac. I don't know how old my battery is, but the guy I bought the truck from last May said it was relatively new. But, here is the problem. I have the little red battery light glowing on my dash and the charging meter reads close to, but less than 50% charging. Shouldn't this meter be near 100% if the alternator is charging as it should? Does this tell which is not performing up to standard? Do I need a new battery or a new alternator?

I'd take it to Advance Auto or one of those box stores and let them run a test on the alternator, starter and battery. They can determine what the voltage is and make sure you replace the right thing.

If the red battery light is on. It means there is a problem in the alt. diode rectifiers. voltage regulator.

Thanks. I was thinking about the same thing. I have an Oreilly's a couple of miles away and they do that.

Yeah the cool part is it's a smart charger so it knows whether to turbocharge or slow charge depending on the device and will show you the amperage that is charging at when you're charging something.
