Is it possible to put a gen 2 steering wheel on a gen 1 and have the cruise control work? Or can I at least change the gen 1 cruise control buttons. I hate the squishy ones.

Probably not.... different mounting if I recall...

I believe the options for a gen 1 would be 1995-2011 ranger wheels, 1995-2001 explorer/ mountaineer wheels, and that's just physically bolting on, not accounting for wiring/clock spring differences.
