Where did you see this? Magnaflow, Walker, etc. Sounds emissions related.

Direct fit means that it will bolt on with no alterations.

Since 2009, the CARB has been anal about aftermarket converters - they must be CARB approved and specific to the vehicle type (used to be that the weight and engine size were the determining factors). So, there are "49 state" (federal) and California replacement (aftermarket) catalytic converters.

I suspect this is where the OEM term applies - if the replacement is OEM, then it's approved for use.

@swshawaii - I am looking at Magnaflow specifically. One says Direct Fit OEM Grade and the other says Direct Fit Federal. Both have a note saying "Not for sale or use in the State of California" and are different prices. (o_O)?

What is OEM Grade?

OEM Grade converters are specially formulated with a heavier wash coat and loaded with twice the amount of precious metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium) to provide a much stronger coverage.

OEM Grade is recommended for vehicles that have:

? High Mileage

? History of Check Engine Lights

? Gross Polluters

? California Emissions Equipment Outside of California

Please refer to your emissions tag located on the underside of the hood.
