I have a 2003 Sport trac with a 4.0L and 4X4. It also has the 8th digit of the vin is the letter E. Would a 4.0 L from a 2004 Ranger which also has 4X4 and 8th digit is also an E be interchangeable?

Yes. There are some sport trac parts on your old engine. I think the intake manifold is one of the biggest things .... maybe....
