I have an idea of where I can find this switch, but my question is how is it accessed? does the tranny have to be dropped?

No, Bolted on the side of the tranny...... BUT check the steering column wiring first...... Common issue in there,...

Is there even steering column wiring for a switch on a manual transmission? does it not just go down through the shift lever down into the transmission housing?

AHH... if a manual then the switch is screwed in the side of the tranny.... Check the plug and test the fuse and wiring first...
