Aloha everyone in Sport Trac world. Joined in on the site and I have a concern that needs to be attended to. I own a '01 Sport Trac that has a rattling sound(like coins dropping) that comes and goes at idle(cold or hot engine). Seems like it's coming from the driver's side valve cover area, and it could be anything internal. Has anyone experienced this type of problem before with their vehicle. Even Ford dealership mechanics can't figure this one out???? Need your input on this..................Thanks:(

There is a TSB on the timing chain. It rattles depending on load.

May want to look in that direction. Also, the tensioner for the chain has been know to fail and when it does it also rattles.

Yes, it sounds like the timing chain tensioner. Ford had given 2001 models an extended warranty until 70K miles for the timing chain, tensioner, cam and other related parts.

The good news is that the noise is just that...noise, and is not a precurser to engine damage.
