Hi : I have a key/lock issue that I was hoping someone could help me with:

The 2010 I recently acquired has an ignition key, however this does not lock the tailgate. It fits into the lock but does not turn. So, the tailgate is always unlocked. There also is no key for the hard tonneau cover, which I have to open using the cable once I open up the tailgate.

Is there a separate key for the tailgate and also another key for the tonneau cover?

Anyone have any suggestions as to what my options are?

    Thank you!

I have a second generation like yours and my one key works door, ignition, cover and tailgate.
My guess is the previous owner had an issue with ignition and had to have a new tumbler put it which came with a new key that was different from the original.
Not sure if you have access to the previous owner but you might want to reach out to see if he has the original key.

Hmm: thank you. Unfortunately, I don't know the original owner. I wonder if the original key codes would enable me to get keys cut for the tailgate and tonneau..?

Your Ford dealer can tell what key came with the car originally.
They might not tell unless they cut it for you.
Each dealer decides that and the price so shop around.
If you can get the key "code" from the dealer there is usually one or two good locksmiths in every town that have all the equipment to cut and code keys and they are generally a good bit cheaper than the deal.
Note you do not need the key programmed just cut.
The security chip is only for the ignition.
Much cheaper to buy a blank and have it cut than to have one cut & programmed.
You will not be using this key to start the car only open the various latches.
Bad news is you will have to carry two keys.

Some times crappy locksmiths cut the keys wrong...... spray a little wd40 in the lock, that's number 1.... Then insert the key all the way, try to turn, NOW slowly and I mean a hair at a time remove the key turning it and see if that works....

Thanks so much. I tried that, but no luck. Hard to figure out what went on with an older car. Maybe the ignition key was changed at some point and only that was passed along to new owners..

    Strange that the ignition/door key
doesn’t work the lift gate..the tonneau I can maybe understand..

The lock could just be stuck. Spray and keep trying with the key you have.

My key wouldn't work on my tailgate either so I sprayed wd40 into it and kept wiggling key around an it started working. My tonneau cover I bought separately so I do have 2 keys now but try the wd40 on both of them.

Hi: thanks for your message. Yes it is weird the ignition/door key fits perfectly in the tailgate barrel and so I don't think barrels were changed..although I could be wrong. I have tried everything and it just won't budge at all. My last resort is a product called Houdini (for locks), but I am not holding out much hope. Might just have to get the barrel changed, and also for the 2 tonneau cover locks..
