My mom just bought a new tv. A walmart Samsung cheapy. Samsung doesnt even show this model on their web site.

The only audio out is digital only. She has a set of amplified rear speakers. But they are analog only. The type that are wireless.

Is there a way to convert the digital to analog. For RCA component type audio wiring.

She doesnt want to buy a digital home theater audio system. The only time she uses the Tv speakers is when other people are there.

Thanks.......

No headphone plug on the TV Eddie?

The digital sound output from the TV probably is an optical connection that requires a fiber optic cable which is designed to go through a Home Theater amplifier system. So the answer is basicly no. I am not aware of any adapter/converter...but they may exist? There are many DVD/CD players with home theater amps build it and they come with 5 speakers and a sub woofer for surround sound, and accept the optical sound cable. Some of them are less than $100. If you check at TigerDirect.com they often have some Refurbished units even lower. I picked up a refurbished Samsung DVD/Home Theater unit a couple of years ago for about $59 and it looked like brand new and works great....even came with an iPod docking station....exceot I don't have an iPod...

Nope,

no headphone jack either. I never seen a TV with so few input/outputs.

We also have to upgrade her direct TV box. So we can get one with HDMI/out. The tv does have 3 HDMI's. One digital audio out only, one component input, no component output, no type S. I guess thats what you get from wally for $348.

Without a sat box with HDMI, we cant hook up her component wires from her vcr/dvd player. The sat is using them.

Luckly, I have freind that is a contract instaler, for sat companies. He and I are going up there sunday to move her dish(she is having eave's face boards replaced) and set up a new sat box. He has a shed full of new sat stuff. He told Mom no charge. I know her though, she will pay him something. I need to find out his fee, and let her decide a payment. Plus she is making a pot of homemade stew...Yum!

Direct TV told mom as long as her box works they wont replace it...DUH

She was using the coax cable on the old crt. The pic was crappy on the new one. So I used the component out on the sat box and the only component in on the new tv.

I wish I had been with her when she bought the TV. I would have said, NADA, to this one.

This is her first flat screen. Her 30yr old, 32" crt, bit the dust. Mom being 82 hasnt kept up with things. She is afraid of my laptop. When I have her to sit and look at something...LOL

It is a 40" samsung, wally special. I read an article yesterday, about samsung factories in china. The line workers work 12 to 16 hour shifts 7days a week. One day off a month. So I wont be buying any samsung....

Richard,

Are any of the home theaters satelite speakers wireless. Dont want to to be crawing in the attic. Doing wire drops down the wall.......

I dont think she wants it anyway. At one time I hooked their old tv audio out to her sony entertainment system. When I went home they unhooked it. My folks arent use to more realistic sound. Mom said, even at low volume and low bass. It made her nervous...

Eddie,

None that are under $100 that I have found.

If she does not want the surround sound, most units allow you to disable some of the speakers...particularly the rear speakers. The front speakers with the Sub Woofer really pack a punch and add a lot of realism to the sound by themselves. Most system also have a balancing that needs to be done, but if the sound is too realistic that may be too much for them?

Just make sure that the type of audio port the TV has....Most of the new flatscreen digital TV use an Optical audio ouput, but some cheaper sets may not?

Joseph,

That looks like what I need. I need to call my mom and ask her to check the manual. See if it is tos-link or coax so I buy the right cable. This tv was so cheap, it came with no cables.

Thanks......:haveabeer:

Both the standard and HD DirectTV receiver boxes have analog RCA audio outputs.

I believe your Mom's existing box also does, most cable and SAT boxes have them.

Would have mentioned this, didn't know she had a cable box. See link, specs on bottom.

Get the SamSung TV model number, I'll check their site manual for your DVD/VCR setup.

Don't buy digital optical or coaxial audio cables, I have box of them after closing the store.

BTW, wireless speakers still need an AC power cord, technically they're NOT wireless.

Steve she wants to be able to control the rear speakers with the tv remote. Mute and volume, etc. The tv speakers have setting to be turned off when not needed.

I have spliters on the audio conectors now of the sat box. For the rear speakers. The rear speakers have a ac/dc power supply. It is the sound that is wireless transmission. @ 2.4ghz.

A week before she had to buy one. She knew the old crt was going out. I tried to talk her into a 46" LG for $50 more than this 40" samsung, a week before. It had the connections. Could have avoided all this.

You dont argue with an 82 yr old Mom.....LOL

Her arguement was 46" is too big. I have a 42" @ 12' distance. Her distance is 17'

Eddie, I'm confused by what she wants the "rear speakers" for? Is she wanting them to provide true rear channel surround sound, with the TV speakers providing the front channels, in basically a Dolby 4.0 configuration? If so, I don't remember ever seeing a TV where that's possible.

Or does she mean for them to be basically an extension of the front channels--that is, that the TV speakers and the rear speakers will be playing the same content, in basically an extended Dolby 2.0 configuration? That, too, could be tough--all TVs I've seen with audio outputs have where you can only have out audio output active--either the TVs own speakers, or the digital/analog output, but not both.

Or does she mean for them to be the ONLY speakers playing at that time? This is the most technically feasible possibility--but in that case, I would definitely recommend to locate them so that they're NOT "rear speakers". It throws off your brain when watching TV--when someone talks, it looks like they're in front of you, but it sounds like they're behind you. It's like not being able to hear someone directly, but being able to hear their echo clearly.

I bought a new tv with the optical connector and I had an old stereo. I purchased the adapter wiwildcat showed above and it works perfect.

I have the converter mentioned above ordered. Mom's TV has the digital coax output. I found an RCA brand 3.6mm double sheilded, digital coax cable. At a .99cent store...LOL

Anytime I need cables or connectors I check this store first. I have bought connectors for $1, that radio shack wanted $8 for.
