I go walking into the Kwik Trip to refill my Best Buddy with Diet Pepsi. I stop dead in my tracks. Jesus Christ.... not THAT song. Overhead, a song was playing that I hadn't heard since I was three years old. Mom played that record all day, every day until it wore out. The song?

I saw the nuns and read the first sentence and was hoping that you had an epiphany about the nastiness of large cups full of diet pepsi and that's why you stopped.

I'm not familiar with this song. This sounds like it would have been torture. Did you learn French through osmosis? At least you weren't a kid in the digital age, digital renditions like this youtube video never wear out.

Eddie, watching the video thinking of Whoopie G's "Sister Act" series of movies made it much funnier for me. I can't believe that she got a grammy...

BTW, around 2:23 is the picture depicting the nuns holding rifles?

I liked the song...I remember seeing them on Ed Sullivan if I remember correctly. Not a song I would want a CD to listen to over & over in my car but it is catchy tune IMO! Of course I can be listening to Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" one minute and then "Blue Moon of Kentucky" by Bill Monroe and then on to Scottich Bagpipe music.

The song was very popular back in the early 1960's and was a very different, unique sound from the other Rock & Roll songs of that era. It was played over and over again by most radio stations and I doubt that you could listen longer than an hour without hearing it at least once.....I hear it so much, I remember being able to phonetically sing the song fairly well (not necessarily in tune) without knowing a word of French....

Might be interesting to find out what the English translation of the song?

I thought the video was a bit strange in that it shows a number of nuns who obviously were not The Singing Nuns, including some dogs dressed like nuns????:bwahaha:

I imagine it was the church's answer to the. Ever progresive folk rock music...

The pope said, do something about this rock and roll.....:bwahaha:

I did a little research. The Singing Nun donated all the royalties from the song to the Catholic Church via her convent. Years later, the Belgian government came after her for tax fraud. She said she didn't receive any money personally for the song. The Church said the received no royalty money. They hung the Singing Nun out to dry. During the ensuing legal battle, the Singing Nun gave up the fight and she and her domestic partner killed themselves.

Aw Mark, do you really think that is true and why would you even bring that stuff up?

Ed,

Mark K is correct...and it is true. The Singing Nun did commit suicide with her partner. She had gotten into a riff with the Catholic church over some of their doctrine and even promoted Birth Control against the church's doctrine. She had attempted several times to make record albums but none had the success as that one song "Domonique".

The Belgian government came after her for over $250K in back taxes she owed for royalties from her recording. She claimed that she did not owe any taxes because she gave all of the money she earned to the Catholic church and the Convent. They denied ever getting any money from her? That all led to financial woes for her and she committed suicide with her room mate in 1984

This is all easy to confirm by just doing a search on "The Singing Nun".

Gavin,

Yes I had found the English lyrics to "Domonique" when I was looking up the info about The Singing Nun.

She also wrote and recorded a song about the "Golden pill" referring to the Birth Control Pills that hit the market in the 1970's.

Gavin,

I did not say or imply that she needed or took birth control pill as a nun. She did not feel the Catholic church's doctrine against any form of birth control was a viable solution for most Catholic women, and attempted to protest against the church's doctrine. That's what started her split with the Catholic church. That along with the arguable issue of whether she kept the royalties from her recording of Domonique, or if she gave it to the Catholic church and her convent as she claimed, and which they deny... Who knows? Anyway, she was no longer a nun when she wrote and recorded the song about the "Golden Pill" around 1974.

Since her partner/room mate was a female and they committed suicied together, I suspect that she was probably gay, and probably did not have any need for birth control pills. She thought that Birth control pills should not be banned by Catholic Church doctrine.... but then that is just my opinion on the situation?

I'm waiting for a hiphop version of the song

She tried disco, but it was lame and past the disco era.

Does that really count as Disco? Sounds like cheesy late 70s/early 80s synth work to me, more 80s, it doesn't sound like Disco to me. I think the Bee Gees and KC would agree

More importantly, why is she even bothering with the inaudible acoustic guitar in the video?

KL,

The original recording has her playing the guitar while singing.... I don't think the so-called disco version is actually a new recording of the song. I think it is simply the original recording with a disco-style drum beat added to the original sound track.

The guitar was never very pronounced, but it was in the original recording and I think the Disco version is the original recording with the drum beat added. My guess is that since the guitar was in the recording, she thought she should have the guitar in the video?

As for it being an authentic Disco style song, I agree it's not! However, remember that she was a nun, so I doubt that she knew a lot about the newly emerging Disco sound back then....Just add a drum beat that people could dance to, and to her, that was Disco...
