Merida and his fiance moved back to Boston yesterday, and Rose is going nuts. Her boy is gone...... They both have a laptop with webcams, so we did a test run todayt between her and I and it seems to be what she can use to SEE her boy... Anyone have experience that can give us some suggestions or pointers.... thanks

My wife and I use it to communicate while she is deployed. Works OK in our case, her internet service is pretty crappy so it's not amazing but its better than her not being able to see our kids at all.

I've also used it with my mom so she could watch my kids opening presents and stuff like that..

No real pointers, its pretty dependent on your internet speed. Sometimes there is some feedback so if you want to talk a lot it might be worthwhile to get a headset so you don't get feedback.

I have had a MagicJack for about 3-4 years now. It works great as a home phone and the small yearly subscription beats anything out there for costs. The new model MagicJack works on a USB port or just on your network router (no computer needed).

I've used it to talk to my niece a few times from Dallas to Shreveport. Works great for us. Speed and quality do depend on your computer and internet connection.

I've used skype numerous times. When I worked in the Audio/Video business, we used the video chat feature to conference with clients. I have also used to talk to my girlfriend while she was out of town. Like others have said, it is really dependent on the quality of internet connection on both ends of the chat.

On a side not, Skype does have some apps you can install to it for free. On a few occasions we installed an app (i forget what it was called) that allowed you to record the video chat. It recorded the video and audio of both sides of the conversation and worked out pretty well.
