Hey guys, I recently traded in my 08 explorer for a red 10 STA and am loving so far. Even better is that I found this forum. So thank you for all the great advice and information.

I'm looking for a compact motorcycle ramp for my 850 lb+ VTX 1800. Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

I recommend that you ride the bike!!!!

Actually, I don't think it will fit inside the bed, and I wouldn't trust the tailgate with MY bike!

You can try Cabella's, Jegs, Summit Racing, or any number of speciality suppliers. Try just to Google "motorcycle ramps" and see what you get. Remember that you'll have to transport the ramp with the truck, so its a bit of space that would take up. Word of caution, First measure the bike and truck to see if it all fits. Second, The VTX is a very heavy bike, Don't know how sturdy our tailgates are. Really, I wouldn't load my Harley in the trac, (I use a trailer) just from a safety standpoint and I wouldn't want to damage her(or lose her!). Put a scale under the back tire and lower the bike on to it and see. I'm 265# and am fine on the gate. But I personally wouldn't go much over 300, especialy if you have a long way to go. JMO, Bob

I'd recommend transporting a bike on a trailer before I'd consider putting it in the bed.

Even if a motorcycle will fit in your bed (it certainly won't in my Gen1), there's a huge risk of it tipping over on you while you try to get it up high on the bed. A trailer intended for motorcycles is much much lower to the ground than your truck bed.

Or better yet, ride it, as DoctorCAD suggested.

I agree that 850 pounds is too much in the bed. Years ago I had to haul a freinds harley. About 600 to 700 pound pan head.

I had it in the bed of my '63 chevy C 10. It was a squirly top heavy ride.

I pruchased a motorcycle ramp that fits in the hitch, but the bike plus the weight of the ramp cannot exceed the 500lb toungue weight of the hitch. It was fine for my son's 300 lb Suzuki 650, but not my Harley Sportster.

Best bet - get a trailer

I have a frieng that has an older Sport Trac & he always hauls his 450lb literbike in the bed. he has a 2x10 with a little bolt-on ramp kit. The bike fits at an angle w/tailgate down. I will be trying to fit my Busa in my 07 this summer, but agree that a small motorcycle trailer would be much better. These look interesting too...

I have a 5'x12' open utility trailer that works great for hauling my Kawasaki Mean Streak 1600. I take a drill and some drywall screws and screw down a 2x4 on each side of the wheels. I do a 2x4 cross the side "rails" with another 2x4 in front and behind the wheels of the bike. Then four ratcheting straps from the bike to the sides of the trailer. Holds it tight and secure.

You could do it with a much smaller trailer, but I use mine to haul drywall, my John Deere garden tractor, and tree limbs, etc. too.
