I've been wanting to do this for about five years now and just kept saying I'll get around to it, well enough was enough.

I took the cladding and rear bumper off two nights ago to have them ready for prep first thing in the morning. I took Simple Green and a Scotch-Brite Steel wool type scrubby to it and scrubbed the hell out of them. You have to rinse the simple green off until you don't see anymore suds, this will take a couple minutes depending on how much you sprayed on.

I used Krylon Fusion Satin Black paint (for plastic), did roughly 4-6 coats on the rear bumper cover and cladding. let dry for the rest of the day and reinstalled back on the truck with black zipties along the bottom edge of the cladding (two per hole) better then the worn out plastic clips that were in there.

This morning I started prepping the front bumper cover, masked it off, covered the foglights with pieces of thin coardboard boxes and then covered the front clip with plastic to protect from over spray.

I did around 4 or 5 coats on the front bumper cover.

before...after....

What a difference! Very nice. I bet you're kicking yourself for waiting so long.

Black out that Ford emblem in the grille - even go for a non-Ford symbol.

Nice job, hope it wears well.

That looks fantastic. I've got a very similar ST, and you might have just inspired me to do the same. (In the Fall, when the humidity here in FL isn't nearly 100%.)

Did you do any other prep besides the Simple Green and steel wool?

Also, how much of the texture is left after 6 coats of paint? (If you could take a close-up shot, that would be great.)

Piro, I did medium thin coats so it didn't clump up or create runs. There is still texture, just Satin Black now.

The only prep I did was I sprayed the hell out of it with Simple Green (even around the edges to the backside) because I painted around to the backside so the paint is solid and sticks.

I added Simple Green while scuffing/ cleaning with the "Scotch-Brite" steel wool pads because it evaporates fairly quick. Then I sprayed down all the pieces with the hose making sure there wasn't anymore suds running off.

Let it all air dry so you don't get any contaminates on the surface. I did use a very thin light coat of flat black primer to cover the grey plastic (the Krylon Satin Black paint for plastic says you don't need to) but I didn't want to have to apply a ton of coats of paint.

I'll take some close-ups so you can see.

Looks great, big improvement. :supercool: I did the flares on my daughter's Jeep with Fusion, also the end caps on the Trac's step bars.

Eddie, yeah, I still have it but since I have a baby boy due in October I bought this tonneau cover from Gary Mendy (member) from up in Cleveland so I can start hauling stuff out of the weather. I do miss having the bar on there too.

Matt, I still have it if you wanna buy it  I still have the Yakima MegaWarrior rooftop basket too. I know unless you moved you're maxed out on height restrictions with your Trac though (parking garage).

Who know's, since my wife has a Mountaineer now I might put the bar back on come springtime, unless I sell it before then.

Matt, I think your Trac would look pretty sick with the wheels you have if you painted your cladding and bumper covers.

Yea, I think it's time to do some painting too!! Have been appreciating that look for a while now, and yours may have pushed me over the tipping point. :)

Yeah, I got tired of showing others over on EF how to do it and seeing there's done while it's been a plan of mine to do it for the past 4-5 years. Just needed that kick to get it done.
