12^3 is 1728.

times pie, 3.1415 is 5428.5

times 4/3 is 7238 inches cubed

I rounded a bit so it may not be exact, but it works just as it's written, no tricks except to raise the radius to the 3rd first.

edit: I see you got it, but another way I liked to write it was [4*pie*(r^3)]/3

You are both correct.

I had an issue with how the fraction and pie was laid out. That number will NEVER change, so why don't they say the number as opposed to a fraction times pie????

When I wrote it all out, it all made sense...

Thanks guys...

Because the number of significant digits used for Pi can be different depending on the application (3.14, 3.1415, 3.141592, ...) and to mess with you ;-).

Yardsale,

you are correct. But in this case the prof has told us to use a specific number. Thus, it will not change.

That said, to input that info into the formula would be a mistake as it would imply that it is the ONLY number to use....
