My Trac has turned 35K and I went to my Ford dealer to ask about extending my warranty. He had 4 plans. The base care costs $1150 to extend to 5 years or 75K miles and has a $100 deductible. I can do away with the deductible for another $90. It covers mainly the drive train, AC, electrical, suspension ETC. The best plan is almost an extension of the new warranty and costs $1470 with a $100,00 deductible. I can do away with the deductible for $300.00 more.

I would appreciate any comments on this. I know of any problems at all on my Trac. It is a 2005 Adrenalin 4 wheel drive.

Thanks, Paul

This is the plan I bought, and had a $50 deductible and it covered every part of the vehicle. I beleive it was the plus plan. It also allowed me to have a rental car as well while the ST was in the shop.

I personally feel it is worth every penny.

The plans available to me are

Powertrain care $1025

Basecare $1150

Extra care $1295

Premiumcare $1470 (pretty much like the origional warranty)

All of the plans can be upgraded to not have any deductable, the cost ranges from $90.00 to $300.00.

All plans are $100.00 deductable

All include roadside assistance, towing, gas service etc, I already have that with AAA.

Thanks for the reply.

I wonder if the site ford sponsor could give you a discount on those???

if you are financing this plan...then I say go with the best plan that covers more with a deductible. You never know when you would need this.

things to consider..if you are handy with tools and mechanical things..do you want to pay it?

how safe do you feel without it? is the price worth piece of mind?

Do you keep up on ALL the suggested maintenance???

You want to be careful of those too. Ive known 2 people personally, that when they went to use them the warranty company was out of business and the people were on their own.

Good point Chase! That was probably a very awful feeling to your friends when that happened.

IF I were to buy an extended warranty, I'd only buy an extended warranty from a Ford Dealership. Check with the Ford Dealership site sponsor. Email them...ask them. They are here for You..

In my opinion, extended warranties are a rip off.

Odds are, you will not need the warranty. The odds are against you that you will never get your investment back.

If the odds were in your favor, they would not sell that warranty.

With that being said, do you have the cash to buy that warranty? If so, can you get a return on 5% to 6% on that money?

I have never purchased an extended warranty. I know people that has and had a hell of a time to collect from it. In they end, they would have been better off to never have paid for the warranty in the first place.

In the end it is up to you. Do you consider this an investment or a feel good feeling?

The warranties listed above are Ford warranties they are not an outside vendor. And Premium Care is the warranty I bought.

For me the 1300.00 was cheap insurance considering they charge 60-80 an hour for labor. My first timing chain issue paid for the warranty in 1 visit. And then I had the same tranny issue as most ST owners.

Good Chad,

I don't have the extended warranty either Tom, I didn't think it was necessary, for me to have one.

I like the offers I get to extend my warranty to 100,000 miles. I'm already at 138,000, of course!

They run the numbers just like you do. It's extra peace of mind for you, but extra money for them! They make more than they'll spend fixing broken vehicles, or they wouldn't do it.

Find out what companies the warranty is with. If it's a Ford ESP warranty that may be OK. If it's with a third party, then you can run into a lot of problems since Ford, or anyother shop will have to get approval from the warranty company before they can make repairs.

My wife bought an extended warranty for her Saturn Ion. When the sun roof leaked the Saturn dealer said the repair was covered under warranty but not replacing the carpeting,.padding and headliner that got soaked. The actual repair was only $40 to replace a clogged drain hose.

I agree that most extended warranties are a rip-off, but then so are many of the standard warranties on things like tires and batteries.

I just emailed Walls Ford to see if they will bid on the contract. I am no longer able to do repairs on my vehicle due to medical conditions and lack of tech tools. I spent 39 years as a mechanic in a steel mill working on everything from lawnmowers to locomotives. The technology has passed me by. The last ten years or so was spent installing and maintaining radio controls on 22 full size locomotives both mechanical as well as simple electronic problems. I will pay cash on the contract if I buy it. I am really thinking that the cheapest plan on just the drive train is the best deal. One engine or transmission would pay for the contract.

Thanks for all the replies. Hope to see you guys in Louisville.

buying the extended warranty from a dealer does NOT mean the dealership or Ford MC backs the warranty. Make sure Ford is behind the warranty, the extended warranty on a certified preowned ford purchased from a ford dealer is backed by Ford MC, not some business offering an extended warranty.

My recent consumer report mag recomends only factory backed warranties. They also dont recomend them at all, with the advent of all the new cars are getting extended powertrain anyway. Only 1% of them sold ever had repair cost that paid for the warranty. One other thing they said was it is not technicaly insurance or a warranty. So it is not regulated. Your only option is to sue. Be sure to read the fine print was definitly recomended. Even if it is a covered part if the damaged was caused by something not covered. You may be left in the cold of paying for the tear down and inspection along with the deductible.
