Strange situation here. 2007 V6 RWD Sport Trac. Under moderate acceleration I frequently hear a sound similar to a failing fan clutch and the engine seems to labor and trans shifts seem extended. Brought to AAMCO and they tested and said all pressures seemed good and that might need to have TCM reflashed. Took to Ford dealer and they claimed they reflashed twice with no luck and could not replicate symptoms. I went with shop manager on test drive and explained to him when I experienced the problem and he was able to replicate. They tore trans down and thought problem was planetary cluster but when warranty adjuster came they could not prove the failure. Now they tell me that they recommend installing a re-manufactured trans and warranty will not cover since they cannot prove part failure. Also have the dreaded driveshaft center bearing failure and item is on national back-order with no fulfillment date. Radiator was recently replaced but I can't recall if the noise/trans issue started before or after the radiator work was done. The vehicle has only 65K and is in, otherwise, pretty good condition, but I question whether I want to drop almost $5K on these repairs.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar, and what was the outcome.
Thanks in advance,
John

Shop manager replicated the problem. They chose to take the trans apart. IMO it is on their dime. Dont stop with the idiot that made the decsion. I never do..

Drive shaft is in stock for like $300 on sale now, just google it... I think its parts authority... ALSO it could have been that the whole time and not the trans...

I pretty much have to wait and see what happens when they say it's ready. I doubt that the warranty company will pay for the trans so we shall see. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the info. I had considered that, but have to rely on the dealership to diagnose. Still, the noise that sounds like a failing fan clutch does seem to come from the engine/firewall area instead of behind the cab.

If you low on coolant ( NOT in the bottle) in the radiator ( Check when cold) that will cause the engine fan to run and its LOUD !!!! a bad t stat, or sender for the computer could do it too....

Keep us posted.

Sorry it took so long to respond. Bottom line is the trans case was damaged due to servo wear and warranty company would not pay for replacement. I ended up having to pay for a re-manufactured trans as well as a small portion of the driveshaft cost that was over the OEM cost. Of course, OEM was not available, so I had to eat the "supply and demand" difference. The dealership was very generous with discounting markup and labor charges so the total repair was just under $4K. At this point, I pretty much had no choice since I had already authorized them to remove and dismantle the trans which meant the vehicle was completely inoperable. At least I now have a two year warranty on the driveshaft and all labor and 3 year warranty on the trans assembly. Not real happy with the overall cost but at least I have my vehicle back. Thanks for all of the responses. For what it is worth, I did write letters to Ford citing the obvious faulty design of the trans and driveshaft, but doubt that they will even respond. But at least it allowed me to vent!
