IMG_2870.JPG New to the site. Have owned a 2002 4WD 4.10 LSD for a few years and love it. Recently, had the Oil Pressure gauge flutter, replaced the sensor, and flutter remained, so I'm dropping the Upper Oil Pan as I type this and will install a replacement oil pump. I'm hoping that the pressure relief valve is to blame. Jumped on here to share my success / sob story! :)

Hope its not timing chain guide plastic parts jammed in there.... Common failure....

Yep, looks like primary tensioner and springs were in the pan. Will pull valve covers and inspect guides as best as I can today. Will hit oil pressure line with compressed air and look for debris in the heads that restricts oil retutning to the pan.

Sadly that motor needs to come out and have all the chains and guides replaced or replace the motor.

I would not dispute that that is what it "NEEDS," but dropping the girdle pan and swapping in a new oil pump is what she's "GETTING." :)

Ended up reinstalling the original oil pump as the new one was cheap and ill-fitting. Found the cause of the low oil pressure looking up from below at the primary chain, though! The primary timing chain guide bolts backed themselves out letting the nub out of the oiling hole! The guide was a couple mm from falling off, and the tensioner is wasted. Drastically lowering oil pressure to all points North! I stole this picture of the oil passage hole with green arrow - just to the right is where the oil pressure switch lives. Will remove timing cover tomorrow and will receive tensioner tomorrow.

IMG_2940.JPG Found the broken nub, replaced the primary chain guide, tensioner, and dammit, the balance shaft tensioner is cracked - so have a replacement due tomorrow and will button it up.

Got it wrapped up! Sounds great. Next on the list is to replace the exhaust - there is debris trapped between the cats, dancing around. :)

Welcome to the fun of the crappy timing design of this engine....

The dancing debris sounds were actually the rear / passenger timing chain intermittently smacking the block / head internally - due to a cheap aftermarket tensioner - threw in a new cheap aftermarket tensioner and truck runs great with no bad noises except front tensioner on cold starts sometimes, and just briefly. Also installed mechanical oil pressure gauge - reading 55 at cold start and 16/17 at hot idle (550rpm - seems a little slow.) truck has other issues such as steering gets heavy like 4wd is coming on and steering wheel rocks back and forth like a bent wheel and pulls to the left out of the blue - but will troubleshoot that and report back - or may crash. Hopefully, i will report back. :)
