I have a 2002 4x4 and I need (way past due 110K:() to start looking at changing the fluid in my transfer case and rear differential. I see that the transfer case looks easy.

My question:

I can't tell if I have a Traction-Lok (limited slip?) or regular differential. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Michael

By the build date located on the door jam.

That little tag tells you a buch about the vehicle you own.

Here is the codes for the differential type (copied from another post):

46 3.73 non-limited slip

42 4.10 non-limited slip

D4 3.73 limited slip

D2 4.10 limited slip

Thanks guys for all the info. I see I have a D2 so its a 4.10 LS Diff. Again, thanks for your help!

Tom, I show a 01/02 date and I also see the relay box next to the air box, so I hope to make the fog light fix today.

Michael

Well I opened the diff cover and a few gears a chewed up and I have metal flakes/bits all over.

I thought I had some chattering, but looks to be more than just that.

I know I need to replace the gears.

Do I replace the axels and bearings as well?

Can I fill it back up with oil a wait to get all the parts in (few weeks) or do I park it till its fixed?

I was all ready to change oil in my 07 trac rear diff. I have the 3.55 with the 3/4 in. drain plug . I think I am ok removing the fill plug if I can find my 3/8ths ratchet but I have a problem . My 1/2 in.drive with the 3/4 adapter wont fit in the space because the end of my half in. ratchet is too thick . I might be able to place the adapter in the sq.hole and use a pipe wrench on the adapter I just dont know and I am open to some suggestions . I'm sure a swivel wont work here because of the angle .

I just use a regular 3/8" ratchet, never had a problem. If memory serves, I don't use an extension I just put the wrench into the plug. I change mine every 30k. It is easier to fill if you take the spare tire out and snake the fill hose through the hole in the middle of the crossmember directly across from the fill plug. I use a transfer pump from Harbor Freight to do the rear diff and the transfer case.

Well I figured it out . 3/4 in. short drive and was able to get a open end wrench on the adapter that was sticking out and presto . Smacking the open end wrench with a hammer broke it loose . Spare tie was off still not too much room to work but put the new oil in without any problem ,didnt even need a pump just used a piece of hose on the end of the bottle .
