Hard stop but just didn't feel right

Just had a near slow speed head on (about 30MPH) and stood on the brake pedal. I know it has ABS (04 ST) but it really seemed all it was doing was slowing down, had the other driver (in the wrong lane) not swerved we would have hit. Felt like a very soft pedal and when it did come to a stop the engine acted like one with a stick and you stopped without pushing in the clutch (stuttered) Mine is an automatic, 2wd, 4.0 engine.
Spooky for sure, got any ideas? I would have expected some skid with the pressure I had on the pedal.

Weak rubber hoses, Wearing Master cylinder, Fluid flush and type of pads, rotor condition ect all play a part.
Also the Gen 1 st brakes suck a bit any way. Flush the fluid and get a set of akibono pads and make sure the master is good.

Thank you. Its a 2004 XLT 2wd with 4.0 V/ I
I'm going to call a shop today and see about flushing the fluid and checking the other stuff, I'll see about the pads you suggest.

Abekono pads are good, but I prefer performance friction. They are carbon metalic, no ceramic. Performance friction pads dont chew up your rotors. I have never had them to fade. The hotter they get the better they grab.

I suspect your front pads are getting low. My '04 did the same as front pads got low. defintly get the system flushed.

Might have been the ABS stuttering. The motor almost stalling might have been the IAC not catching idle point soon enough.
