hey guys, what would be causing premature whelp hub failure? My front right is out again after I just replaced it probably 4 months ago. I seem to go through hubs a LOT on the trac, like every 2-3 years. trying to narrow down why. Thanks!

What brand? Detroit Axle from eBay by chance? I'd be very surprised if they're Timken.

I’ve always torqued to 185 ft lbs! I’m just curious if bad cv axles could cause it. I just replaced both sides this past week. As well as both tie rod ends as the boots were pretty wasted. Also noticed that my lower control arm bushings are looking pretty bad. I’ll probably just replace both arms as soon as I figure out how to remove the torsion bars! Seems like a real pain! Also, I noticed that the rear drive shaft coming out of the transfer case has some movement which seems to be coming from the bearings in the case. Grrrrr! One thing after another with the Trac lately! It’s a 2001 though so I guess it’s to be expected!

Thanks!

Bearings must be installed without impact guns and axle nut IN THE AIR !!! flange must be power cleaned smooth, not hand, and wire brush. I cant be lucky but never had to replace any a second time.
Also use Moog....

How would I torque the axle nut with the truck in the air? Is there a way to lock down the hub so it doesn’t spin when doing so? Also, I never use air tools when I work on the trac, except to take off the lug nuts!

Ok good.

Hand tighten the axle nut, install the rotor and brakes, use 1 lug nut to hold the rotor tight to the hub and then have a second person hold the brakes tight while you Torque it.
