So an overhead cam engine has no lifters right? If that is so the came lobe rides on the valve stem and would wear it out? Is there a shim between the cam lobe and the valve stem? What am I missing here?

Thanks guys, so we do have lifters.

Many overhead cam engines have some form of hydraulic or solid lifter in different configurations to compensate for wear on the cam and lifter surface. Also, many overhead cam engines use some form of rocker-arm activation of the valves rather than direct cam or lifter contact. In these cases, the rocker arm will usually have some means of adjustment. I am not sure about the Ford 4.0L V6, but since I have not seen any routine maintenance requirement to adjust valve lash, they are probably hydraulic lifters that require no adjustments after the initial setting unless the engine/heads have been disassembled.
