I have a 2002 Track, there is a strong clatter when it starts cold. does the d. thing have three chains? I have replaced the one by the passenger wheel twice and the one under the thermostat once and still have the noise. I think that ford should come up with something better that this. Please excuse my rant. Ed

Did you replace the chain or just the tensioner ??

The 4wd has 4 chains..... 2wd has 3.

I believe there is as many as 4. From my memory. the 4x2 models has one from the crank to a rod where a traditional cam is located. Then there is a chain to each head, one in the back and one in the front. 4x4 models have an additional chain to a balance shaft.

I may be wrong since it has been close to 10 years since I read this.

oops, sorry just the tensioner. How do I get to the tensioner in the back to change it?

the back side one is on the passenger side if I remember under the exhaust manifold.

But rarely its the tensioner..... Normally the chain is stretched or the guide is worn out.

Have to remove engine to replace.
