I bought a used 08 2WD sport trac with 47K miles on it. About to hit 50K, and since I don't know what maintenance was done on the truck, what all should I do at 50K? I have the manual, but wondering if I should do any other maintenance other the oil/filer/air filter at this time? I really want this truck to make it o 200K! I only put about 9000 miles a year on my vehicles. The only thing I know for sure is that the radiator was flushed recently, and oil was changed at 45000.

thanks!

I'd change the fuel filter, trans fluid, diff fluid and brake fluid. Check brake pads while you're doing the brake fluid. Pull a spark plug or two and see what you think of those. Check condition of serpentine belt and have your battery tested. Lift car and remove You can see fluid specs and capacities using AMSOIL's online lookup. See my website.

Pull a spark plug or two

If It's a V8 be careful doing that. Make sure you've got the tool to remove the plug if it breaks on hand. I don't think the complete change to the head to fix the issue with the broken plugs was done until mid-year 2008.

Check build date on door pillar sticker. Before 11/30/07 has two piece plugs.

His profile says he has a V6. It's a good engine. One quirk is the thermostat housing. Watch for leaks that may develop and replace the housing when necessary.

Please update your profile with year and engine. It'll cut down on confusion, such as others thinking you have a V8 when you have the V6.

Thank you guys! Will do and I've updated my profile as well. I bought the truck from CarMax, so do you think I should have them do the first service in case anything is wrong like a stripped plug, etc?

If you're not a DIYer then CarMax would be a good choice. They're going to use adequate fluids and parts. They'll probably tell you it's not necessary to replace spark plugs until 100K, but others here prefer sooner, some later. I'd definitely do the fuel filter, trans fluid and diff fluid though.

bmansc,

Since you don't know what service that truck had done up until you bought it, I would recommend doing everything that should have been done in the first 50K miles.

Change oil and filter, Flush the transmission fluid, change the coolant, Check the brake pads and replace if needed. Flush the brake fluid, Check tires for uneven wear and have the front end aligned if needed.....Add a good Fuel injector cleaner to the tank, and perhaps a good SeaFoam treatment to clean out the intake system.....do all this at the very minimum.

Also check all the rubber hoses and belts since they deteriorate more with age than mileage and about 5 years is when they start to go bad. You should not need spark plugs in 50K miles unless the engine is running rough or you are getting CEL error that indicates a misfire, and then you should also check the coil-packs.
