Zero Tolerance for Kids Acting Like Adults:

Adrionna Harris, a sixth-grader at Bayside Middle School in Virginia Beach, Va., spotted another student cutting himself with a razor blade. ?It was a 911 situation,? said Harris?s mother, Rachael, ?and there wasn?t time to find a teacher.? So the girl took the blade away from the student, threw it away, and helped him herself. When school officials found out what she had done ? because she told them ? they immediately suspended her for 10 days, pending permanent expulsion for ?possessing? a ?weapon? on school grounds against the district?s zero tolerance policy. The school wouldn?t even return Rachael?s phone calls ? until the local TV station got involved, even calling School Board members at home to ask why. They moved up Adrionna?s hearing, and at the hearing voted to clear her record completely and let her come back to school. Would she do it again? ?I would do it again even if I got suspended, yes,? she said. (RC/WAVY Portsmouth) ...And unfortunately, school officials probably would too.

Zero Tolerance for Adults Acting Like Adults:

When her son?s teacher called and said her special needs son was panicking, Niakea Williams rushed to Walnut Groves Elementary School in Calverton Park, Mo. A teacher recognized her and buzzed her in, and Williams rushed to her son?s side. But as she was consoling him, the school?s principal showed up: Williams had failed to sign in. ?You can bring me the book,? Williams suggested. ?She said, ?Oh no, I?ve already called the police.?? An officer arrested Williams, and the school was locked down for 12 minutes. A week later, a school district spokeswoman offered another side to the story: ?She ran past the desk. A couple of staff members yelled out for her to stop and go to the main office, but she did not respond to those request.? (AC/KMOV St. Louis) ...When a student panics, you call the parent. When a mother panics, you call the cops. And when a principal panics?

I hate zero tolerance policies! Kids do need to be held accountable when they do something stupid, but there are other times when a valid explanation as in your first story make sense. Just like the 6 year old student expelled for "sexual harassment" when he kissed a girl last December.

I agree with TJR. The schools are just playing CYA. Better to just react like brainless robots instead of common sense and logical judgement, and end up getting sued!

"CYA" and "protocol" exist to protect those lacking good judgement or intelligence. Senior administrators do not work within those protected areas.
