The steering and brake safety lockout for shifting into gear is hanging up.Won't go in gear with out a battle. I've heard there's a way around it? Is there away to disable it or manually release it ? 05 sport trac auto/4whd

Chances are its the common loose screws on the back of the steering column, google it.
OR
The bracket on the transmission is rusted and bending
OR
the cable is worn and needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the response. I found a video on the loose shifter on youtube and this could be my problem, as mine is very loose. I'll be checking this out later today. Thanks again.

Yesterday finally got to it after scanning through videos on you tube as you mentioned. None really looked quite like mine. Removed lower panels in order to at least see if screws were loose, {little hard for me 6'3'' and 70,lol }, with a mirror and some light I found the bracket and it was tight. From all the videos I'm pretty sure it's the shift interlock in the column. Too bad it isn't a floor console,be A 'LOT' easier. Till I get back at it I did find a very workable go around. Just turn key once toward start,'Not' to power on,just before. Shifts out of park into neutral to start with no problem. Now that works on my 05 sport trac 4 x 4 6 cyl. auto,it may not on your particular vehicle. But at least on the road again.

Yeah, I had 3 Gen 1's.... Glad you got it working some what...
