Sent the trruck in for timing chain replacement yseterday. The mechanic had to remove the transmision first! Those of you rthat have done this does the trans have to come out in order the remove the engine?
Thanks Ed

It depends on the room in the engine bay. Some times yes. Some times it mkes it easier to pull the motor. Depends on the vehicle. The trans has to be removed to get to the rear chain.

thanks Eddie, I suppose that I can trust him now.

A word to you folks doing this. If at all possible have the mechanic order the parts. The mechanic wanted me to get the parts, I bought a timing chain kit, it had only one chain, (mine needs three). The parts house won't have the correct one until 5pm monday. I gues this is a "thank Jaeus" moment.

Ed, hopeful that he has the chain alighnment degree wheels. It is something that cant be guessed at.

Let's think positive!!

Amen, ED. Trust Jesus, to guide the mechanic..
we got the truck back today. It runs goodwe are happy. 'wrecked the first rental car $500 deductable. All together $3700. to fix. Parts are expensive over here.

UGH, Glad your ok and its fixed... that's a good price btw.... its a huge job !!

I agree with Todd. Good price and you have your own motor, that you know is good. Not a motor from salvage.

This is the BEST 4 part series on replacing these timing chains I've ever seen. Well worth the watch even if you have no interest in doing this yourself.

This is part 1 but you can watch the whole series.

Removing the transmission sounds like extra work. But different strokes for different folks. It doesn't mean the mechanic is padding the bill.
