I have a 2002 explorer sport trac (158,000 miles) and have a rough idle. I put a K&N type air filter on it years ago. I have replaced plugs, plug wires, rubber elbow back by firewall and egr valve on end, and a couple of times it through a code and was spark plug. Now no code and still idles rough. It starts and runs good, just rough idle. Anyone got an idea on my problem? I looked thru previous thing but nothing like mine. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Geno

If you recently replaced the plugs and wires. I would start with checking the plugs. make sure you didnt crack the ceramic.. Check the tracing of the wires and that they are pluged in tight.
Have you cleaned or replaced the IAC(idle air controler). If not @ 160k miles I would just replace it. Also get some CRC MAF cleaner. Clean it and the throttle body.
Make sure you didnt miss any vaccum hose leaks.

I looked it up online and did what you said, clean IAC and throttle body and it made it idle much better. Thanks

Change the coil too....

Have you cleaned the MAF sensor, since installing the K&N filter? I have found that a fresh oiled K&N, will eventualy build up a scum, on the MAF wires.
Just asking because I didnt' read any reference from you, on that Item.

From my previous posts, I have cleaned and checked everything and the rough idle went almost away for a month or so and is back and not as bad. A friend of mine said, most people have same problem with 4.0 engines when he looked into it online and no sure fixes. I have same 2 codes,po300 and po316, I decided 2 things that show some help. We changed the camshaft sensor STD. pc423 & crankshaft sensor STD pc250 from O'reillys. I will see if it works. If anyone has any other tries, let me know. Thanks GENO

did you change the FRONT elbow for the pcv ?? you said you did the rear.... the front is way common....

Follow the pcv line to the right front of the intake. Behind the TB elbow. That is the one that rots on the bottom. Usualy cant see it unles you remove it.
I looked at video and will check it tomorrow am. I replaced the other end pvc and hose last year and it was bad. Thanks for your help. Geno

I checked the front pvc and elbow and they were changed last year. The truck is idling much better now, but not perfect, and it always starts good. I am closer, but not there yet! Thanks for every ones help. Geno
