Hey everyone, so I’ve got a 2002 Ford Sport Trac that I’ve recently bought and it’s time to get the plugs done. I’ve been quoted $400 to get it done by my mechanic but I think it’ll be like 500 when it’s all said and done so I’m thinking about doing it myself. I know that the drivers side is pretty easy but I’m still not finding a lot of info on it. I know I’ve gotta take the tire off on the passenger side along with the heat shield but is there anything else I should know about before I get into it? I’ll be doing all wires and coil packs as well.
 
Get GOOD sockets and anti sieze, and a few different extensions and swivel.... Tire and fender trim is the best for the passenger side. Drivers is easy...
 
Good advice. Also use plugs designed for the 4.0L SOHC. Motorcraft SP-500, Autolite APP103, or XP103.
CAREFULLY check gaps @ .054" and use high heat copper or nickel anti seize available in pocket packs.
Good for another 60k minimum.
 
High heat copper anti sieze, works the best. It is designed for electrical. So it will meake the spark plugs make a better ground contact with aluminum or iron heads. Dont apply it on the first 2 or 3 threads. As so it dosnt' goop up on the electrode.
Steve is right about the plug choice. The heat range is exact for our motors. Fancy plugs dont do any good. Get a good set of spiral core wires. They have less resistance, and will carry more voltage to the plug. If your coil pack has been working. No need to change it.

I was just gonna change the coil pack since it’s way overdue to get the plugs done anyways. Want to make sure everything is done right and will last for a long time
 
your not really there, the coil is more work..... its not like the 4.6 where they are COP..... Don't waste the money on it.

Spiral core wires....im on RockAuto..what brand do you suggest,what cost approx?
 
I like Tayor brand wires. I have used many brands thru the years. I usualy look for at least an 8 to 10mm silicone dual jacket.
